Mission Statement
UNC-Chapel Hill Department of Geography and Environment
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusiveness Mission Statement
The Geography and Environment Department at UNC Chapel Hill is committed to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusiveness (DEI) for our student body, faculty, and staff. We recognize that fostering a supportive, respectful, and free academic environment makes us intellectually more powerful, creative, and successful as an academic unit. We welcome, value, and learn from different perspectives in teaching and research. As a discipline, we have made significant strides toward a scholarship and academy with more diversity, equity, and inclusiveness, but we have more work to do toward this goal. A welcoming academic environment to all helps prepare geographers to engage and become leaders in the world.
The Department of Geography and Environment aims to do the following :
- Support and liaise with relevant DEI initiatives across campus and in the discipline.
- Identify opportunities to enrich DEI for students, faculty, and staff in our department
- Collect and distribute information about resources (grants, fellowships, scholarships) available to promote DEI among our students and faculty
- Strengthen our faculty’s academic freedom in pursuing their scholarship in DEI
- Sponsor speakers and outreach activities that enrich DEI for all
