Geography professor Diego Riveros-Iregui is one of three inaugural recipients of the Faculty Award for Global Excellence from the Office of the Vice Provost for Global Affairs. Riveros-Iregui is cited for “extraordinary steps to create international field research experiences for undergraduate and graduate students.” He was presented the award by UNC’s Chief Global Officer, Vice Provost Barbara J. Stephenson in the Nelson Mandela Auditorium in the Fedex Global Education Center during Diplomacy Week. His citation adds that “by training students to collect and analyze carbonshed data in the field, he is helping Carolina prepare the next generation of global leaders who will address the grand challenges of our times such as climate change.”

The newly established Faculty Award for Global Excellence recognizes faculty members who have made significant contributions toward the Globalize pillar of Carolina Next: Innovations for Public Good strategic plan. This includes efforts to strengthen global partnerships and bring the world to Carolina; expand the menu of global education opportunities for all Carolina students; and amplify the virtues of Carolina’s culture of low stone walls by collaborating with international partners to address the world’s greatest challenges.
