Sidney Hip, an undergraduate student majoring in Environment, Ecology, and Energy, has won the prestigious Innovative Use of GIS competition. Co-sponsored by UNC Library and the Department of Geography and Environment, the competition celebrates creative applications of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology.

The student will also receive the G. Herbert Stout Award for innovative GIS use at the 2025 NC GIS Conference, where she is set to present her research paper, “Vegetation Health Decline in the Gaza Strip: Analyzing NDVI Changes During the Israeli-Hamas Conflict.”

Her work highlights the potential of GIS in analyzing environmental impacts in conflict zones, showcasing the power of spatial technology in addressing global challenges.
