Bikesh Jojiju, a PhD student in the Department of Geography and Environment, has emerged as the winner in the graduate student category of the Innovative Use of GIS competition. The event, co-sponsored by UNC Library and the Department of Geography and Environment, recognizes excellence in leveraging GIS for impactful research.

Bikesh’s paper, “Assessing Annual Soil Loss in Phewa Watershed, Nepal, Using RUSLE Model,” explores soil erosion dynamics and their implications for watershed management. His innovative approach underscores the vital role of GIS in addressing environmental sustainability.

Bikesh will also receive the G. Herbert Stout Award for innovative GIS use at the 2025 NC GIS Conference. He will represent UNC at the upcoming NC GIS Conference in 2025, where he will present his research and contribute to discussions on advancing geospatial technology in environmental studies.
