In Today’s UNC GIS Day Map Contest, sponsored by Dept. of Geography and Environment and UNC Library, Mark Chilton, a student from GISci Graduate Certificate Program, received 3rd place with his online map: registerchilton.github.io/Geography456//
The title of his online map is “Forgotten Landmarks”. Mark summarized his map “I have taken thousands of Orange County deeds (1752-1852) and transcribed their legal descriptions. I wrote some JavaScript code to translate these descriptions into polygons. Then using clues from these descriptions, I arranged the polygons into a searchable online map. This new mapping tool allows us to look at the spatial arrangement of our local area in the past, allowing us to see a landscape that has only partially been erased. Please be sure to press the demo buttons at the top for examples of how to use the map. “
