McNally Award for Excellence in Geography: Anne Sutton

This award is given annually to a graduating senior who is selected by the geography faculty based on superior academic performance. The award was established by Andrew McNally IV, Class of 1963.


Melinda Meade Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research: Rachel Woodul for her honors thesis: “Hospital Surge Capacity for an Influenza Pandemic in the Triangle region of North Carolina”.


John W Florin Award for the Best Research Paper on the United States, the South, North Carolina:


 Aisling Henihan for “Visualizing the Great Depression in North Carolina: Dorothea Lange”, a story map produced for Dr. Kirsch’s Geography 454 class. Story map is available here:

 & Emily Goldstein for her honors thesis, “We Shall Not Be Moved: A History of Anti-expressway Organizing by the Crest Street Community in Durham, North Carolina”

J Douglas Eyre Award for Outstanding Leadership: This is a Geography Department award honoring Dr. J. Douglas Eyre, professor of Geography at UNC from 1957 to 2001. This award is granted to an undergraduate major demonstrating outstanding leadership relevant to the Geography Department and/or the field of Geography or which otherwise includes a significant geographic element. This may include leadership service and public engagement in geographically situated social or environmental causes.


Stephen S. Birdsall Award in Human Geography: Casey Lunceford for her honors thesis: “The Incarcerated Worshipper: Carceral and Religious Geographies in the Space of Prison Ministry”
