Visiting the Department - Department of Geography and Environment

We welcome visitors to the department, whether you are a high school student, a parent, or a prospective PhD student. Much of the general information for visiting UNC can be found here. Please refer to the appropriate program page if you wish to contact program administrators or faculty to arrange meetings.

Carolina Hall is located on historic Polk Place, and is shared by Geography and Religious Studies. The building was named Saunders Hall from 1920 until 2015 after William L. Saunders, who was a UNC alumnus and trustee, North Carolina’s Secretary of State, and a leader of the North Carolina Ku Klux Klan. In 2015 the building was renamed to Carolina Hall by the UNC Board of Trustees because of Saunders’ role in the Ku Klux Klan. To learn more about this, please visit the Carolina Hall Story website.

Daily Visitors:

Daily visitors to the Department can find metered parking at Morehead Planetarium on Franklin Street. Visitor parking is also available and marked on the Campus Visitors’ Map

Short-term Visitors:

The Department of Geography and Environment welcomes short-term visitors who wish to carry out research or meet with colleagues for a few days or weeks during the year. Depending on demand, we may be able to provide study space and access to the library and research facilities. Requests should be made to individual faculty members who would serve as your host.

Semester-long visits:

The Department has no funds to support such visits, but we can provide formal letters of invitation and facilitate access to library and research facilities for researchers who would like to carry out work in the region or make use of UNC’s extensive facilities and libraries. Individuals should contact faculty sponsors in whose research area they work. Visitors may present their research to individual research groups or in the Department Colloquium Series.
