The Department of Geography at UNC-Chapel Hill is one of the largest, most diverse and most dynamic departments in the country. Our graduate students benefit from a collegial and interdisciplinary environment, participation in our large externally-funded research program, and abundant opportunities for involvement in teaching and departmental governance. We offer both MA and PhD degrees, with a primary focus on students pursuing the PhD who enter with or without an MA. Areas of concentration include Earth System Science, Geographic Information Science, Nature and Society, Globalization and International Development, and Culture, Society and Space. For current UNC students, the Department also offers a Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Sciences.
Prospective students should read the information under Applications and consider contacting prospective mentors on our Faculty. We also encourage you to browse the interests of our Current Students and the career paths of our Recent Graduates. For current students, information is available on our Courses, Graduate Handbook, and Awards and Fellowships, and from UNC’s Graduate Handbook. Further questions can be directed to Dr. Scott Kirsch, Director of Graduate Studies, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
