First year PhD student Devran Koray Ocal has been awarded a faculty-graduate student joint research award by The Center for European Studies at UNC-CH. This funding will support the project he is conducting with his adviser, Dr. Banu Gökarıksel, which examines how the Turkish Islamic Union of Religious Affairs impacts the construction of a Sunni Muslim Turkish community, identity, and space in Germany. With this funding, Devran will go to Turkey and Germany for the first phase of this project this summer.
